FAQ

How are aesthetics and dry eye disease linked?

Chronic inflammation is the root cause of many conditions, including dry eyes and skin discoloration. By treating the root cause of inflammation with IPL, and restructuring the skin and oil glands with RF, we not only treat dry eyes, but we also see beneficial cosmetic effects.

OptiLight works by directly attenuating chronic inflammation in the skin (photobiomodulation). It is the only FDA-approved intense pulsed light (IPL) device for dry eyes.

Typical side effects are mild redness (1-2 days) and temporary darkening of age spots (2-7 days). Expect age spots to fade or completely resolve by the fourth treatment.

Occasionally, bruising or blistering may occur. Notify the doctor immediately of unexpected side effects.

Anyone with skin cancer in the treatment zone, epileptic episodes triggered by flashing lights, or who is pregnant should not have IPL treatments.

It is important to inform the doctor about recent sun exposure, the use of tanning agents, new medications, or suspicious lesions in the treatment zone so the treatment can be adjusted to accommodate these changes.

People undergoing radiation or chemotherapy, or who are being monitored for pre-cancerous lesions (in the treatment area) will need clearance from their dermatologist or oncologist.

RF treatments improve microcirculation in the skin and melt the thickened oils trapped in the meibomian glands of the eyelids. The OptiPlus is the first dual-frequency monopolar RF device, making it safer and more comfortable than other RF devices. The treatment not only provides skin-tightening, but it also restructures collagen and meibomian glands.

The doctor will perform a test spot to gauge the intensity and comfort. Treatments last about 15 minutes and may feel warm or snappy. Most patients find they are no longer reliant on traditional therapies, such as prescription drops, pills, and compresses. Dry eye improvement is typically seen by the end of the initial protocol, about 4 sessions, but aesthetic improvements are usually observed sooner.

Anyone with a pacemaker, who is pregnant or breastfeeding, or who has skin cancer in the treatment zone should not have RF treatments. Active skin infections or wounds will delay treatment. Other considerations may alter treatments, like certain medications.

Treatments last about 15 minutes and will feel like a warm, gentle massage. Unwanted side effects typically do not occur but may include mild redness and swelling. Beneficial side effects can be skin tightening and localized fat reduction, depending on which settings are used. Optimal dry eye results are seen when OptiPlus is combined with OptiLight.
